Following Christmas holidays spent road tripping through Queensland visiting family and New Years spent celebrating with friends along the Brisbane River, there were 2 of us (make that 3 with Evie, the furry of us 3) calling the quirky suburb of West End home for 3 days as we settled into a lovely, plant adorned, minimalist Air BnB home. A holiday would not be a holiday without good food and so I researched the area for the best veggie foodie finds West End had to offer.
Sol Natural Foods in West End looks great on paper (read online) with it’s freshly baked artisan breads, wholesome meals, beautiful raw cakes, fresh juices and smoothies and organic coffee complete with house-made almond milk. The bread is freshly made using local wholegrain ingredients and the complementary cafe menus are full of delicious, wholesome foods. The cafe is filled with a friendly buzz during the day and come Friday and Saturday nights is open for pizza.
When the 3 of us walked down to the cafe the day after New Years Day, we loved the community feel and the name of the cheeky shop across the road, Mick’s Nuts (love a good pun). We sat at one of the outdoor tables for a while, finding it hard to choose with all of the great breaky and lunch options. Though when it came time to order we weren’t able to order any of our choices due to low stock since the holiday closure, there wasn’t enough ingredients to make the Acai Bowl or either of our smoothies and there was none of that house-made almond milk I would’ve loved to try with our coffees. They must have been flat-out as this was all said with a rushed sigh. So instead we opted for a Brekkie Bagel for Kev, one of the pre-made salads (mixed leaves, carrot, beetroot, nuts and seeds) from the window, a coffee with coconut milk and a smoothie made with what they could put together (Hello Mystery Smoothie!). The salad was tasty for a pre-made salad and the rest was good for a busy day-after-new-years-day though I hope to go back on my next Queensland road trip to give their promising menu another shot.
